COVENTRY'S FORGOTTEN THEATRE

The history of the Royal is as dramatic as many of the productions which graced its stage. That so little information of the building survives has necessitated much detective work. Only two photographs of the theatre have surfaced and the author has put forward several drawings of what the interior of the theatre may have looked like at various stages of its life.

Among the pages will be found thumb nail sketches of the famous stars of the period, including Ellen Terry and Charles Coborn, who played the Royal, together with details of the more popular productions which toured there. There are explanations of the many popular stage effects such as limelight, Pepper's Ghost, the Corsican trap, star trap and many more. Rival productions at the Sydenham Palace and Britannia Music Halls and the larger Corn Exchange have been detailed in order to give a wider picture of the opposition that was felt by the Royal's lessees.

This volume, written in a light and easy style, illustrates how the provincial Victorian theatre worked and the links Coventry had with other provincial theatres and music halls. A number of the author's personal photographs have been included. The book is intended for the general reader as much as the student of theatre history.
